What Casting Calls Actually Ask For
Age 30 sits inside 57.3% of stated ranges, the peak of the curve. What 55,398 listings specify about age, gender and ethnicity, and how to position against it.
of stated age ranges include 30, the highest of any age
Of every age a person could be, thirty shows up in more casting calls than any other. It appears inside 57.3% of every age range stated across the corpus, which is the peak of a curve that is flatter and stranger than the industry's reputation suggests.
What follows comes from 55,398 casting calls collected between May 17 and August 30, 2026, of which 35,113 state a numeric age range. This is a description of a market, not a scorecard. Nothing here is a verdict on any actor, and a couple of the numbers cut against the story people tell about this business.
The age curve
| Age | Share of stated ranges that include it |
|---|---|
| 18 | 28.4% |
| 25 | 54.4% |
| 30 | 57.3% |
| 35 | 54.1% |
| 40 | 47.5% |
| 50 | 34.4% |
| 60 | 24.0% |
| 70 | 15.8% |
of stated age ranges include 30, the highest of any age
Look at what the top of that curve is doing. From 25 to 35 the numbers barely move: 54.4, 57.3, 54.1. That is not a spike, it is a plateau ten years wide, and inside it a three-year difference in how you read is worth almost nothing. The competitive fact about that band is not that demand is concentrated there. It is that everyone else is there too.
Now look at 18. Twenty-eight point four percent, half the rate of an age twelve years older. The youngest legal adults are asked for far less often than people commonly assume, which makes sense once you consider that a production wanting a teenager on screen has strong practical reasons to hire a twenty-two-year-old to play one.
And the decline after 40 is genuine. It is also slower than the folklore. Age 60 sits inside 24.0% of stated ranges, which on a market posting a median of 585 new roles a day is not a rounding error. It is roughly one listing in four, in a category with a fraction of the competition of the plateau.
How wide the windows are
The median requested range is 21 to 40, with a median span of 14 years. That is a wide door. But the average conceals a split, because 42.6% of listings ask for a span of ten years or less, and a ten-year window is a different instruction entirely.
The most common exact ranges, counted character for character:
| Stated range | Listings |
|---|---|
| 18 to 99 | 2,148 |
| 25 to 35 | 992 |
| 18 to 30 | 967 |
| 18 to 25 | 900 |
The most common single instruction in American casting is 18 to 99, which is a polite way of typing no age requirement. Two thousand one hundred and forty-eight listings said it. That is more than twice the next entry, and it should change how anyone treats a listing with a very wide or absent age spec: not as a placeholder to skip, but as the largest single category on the board.
Gender
Gender is stated on 92.1% of Casting Networks listings, 71.8% of Backstage and 71.2% of Actors Access. Of the 43,637 listings that name one, here is the distribution.
| What the listing asks for | Share |
|---|---|
| Man only | 44.2% |
| Woman only | 38.0% |
| Multiple genders | 9.3% |
| Any or open | 8.1% |
| Non-binary or trans specified | 0.4% |
The gap between the first two rows is six points, which is smaller than the industry's own conversation about it usually implies, and it is still six points across more than forty thousand listings. Both things are true.
The more interesting row is the pair at the bottom of the middle. Multiple genders and any or open together account for 17.4% of stated listings, meaning roughly one role in six is not gender-restricted at all. If you filter your feed strictly by your own gender, that sixth never reaches you.
The 0.4% figure needs care in how it is read. It counts listings that explicitly specify non-binary or trans casting. It does not count who is welcome to submit to the 8.1% marked open, and it is a measure of what gets typed into a field, not of who books.
Ethnicity, where the field exists at all
Only Casting Networks carries an ethnicity field. Of its 15,614 listings that populate it, 3,404 say Any Ethnic Appearance and 5,101 select every available appearance, which is the same answer entered a different way. A little over half of all populated ethnicity fields are therefore functionally open. The remaining 7,109 name a specific set.
Two things follow. Specific casting is a real and substantial share of the market, not a footnote. And the single most common thing a casting director does with that field is decline to narrow it, which is worth knowing before deciding a listing is not for you.
Using this for positioning
- Pick your played-age band against the tight listings, not the loose ones. The wide ranges will take you anyway. The 42.6% asking for ten years or less are where a credible, specific claim earns its keep.
- If you sit inside the 25 to 40 plateau, age is not your differentiator, because it is nearly everyone's. Whatever separates you from the field is somewhere else in your materials.
- If you are over 50, the volume is lower and so is the room. One listing in four includes 60, and the submission counts on those roles do not look like the plateau.
- Stop skipping listings with no age spec or an open ethnicity field. 18 to 99 is the most common range on the board and open appearance is the most common ethnicity answer. A blank is not a hint.
- Check what your feed's filters are silently removing. Roughly one role in six is not gender-restricted, and a strict filter deletes all of them before you see them.
None of this predicts an individual outcome, and it is not meant to. It describes what tens of thousands of listings asked for over one summer. The useful part is that a lot of those listings asked for far less than actors assume, and the widest doors on the board are the ones people are most likely to walk past.
